How to choose the right parking solution?

Barriers, ticket kiosks, badges, licence plate recognition cameras, cloud software, purchase or subscription: parking management solutions look alike on paper, but their costs, timelines and impact on your users are very different. A poor choice is paid for over years in maintenance, staff time and lost revenue. This guide gives you the 8 criteria that really matter to choose the solution that fits your car park.

01

Start with your users, not the technology

Before comparing equipment, set the frame: who parks at your site (guests, patients, employees, subscribers, passing visitors)? Is parking free, paid or both? How many spaces, how many entries and exits? Do you have staff on site at all hours? A hotel with late arrivals, a clinic with unpredictable flows and a coworking space with regular subscribers don't need the same setup. The right solution adapts to your operations, not the other way around.

02

Choose the right identification method

Three main families coexist. Tickets: familiar to everyone, but they create friction, losses and consumables. Badges: suited to regular users, but unworkable for visitors. Licence plate recognition (LPR): the plate becomes the ID, with no ticket, no badge and no app to download. For most private car parks, LPR is now the standard.

03

Compare total cost, not purchase price

The sticker price tells you almost nothing. Add up the upfront investment (kiosks, barriers, civil works), maintenance, consumables, on-site callouts and your team's time. Then compare with a subscription model, which removes the upfront investment and includes remote maintenance and updates. The question to ask: what will this car park cost me over 3 to 5 years, and what will it earn me?

04

Check deployment time and complexity

Some solutions require weeks of works, trenching and partial closure of the car park. Others install in a few days on existing infrastructure. Ask for a precise schedule: who is on site, how long the car park is disrupted, when the solution is actually live. Every week of delay is a week of lost revenue.

05

Put the user experience first

Your car park is the first and last point of contact with your business. A user searching for a ticket, forced to download an app or queuing at the exit leaves with a bad impression. Choose a solution with no ticket, no mandatory app and simple, fast cashless payment. For a hotel or clinic, that smoothness is perceived as a quality signal.

06

Demand real remote management and usable data

A good system does more than open a barrier. It gives you real-time occupancy, parking durations, revenue, subscribers and incidents, accessible from any device. Also check for flexible pricing, automated accounting exports and multi-site management if you run several locations.

07

Plan for how your car park will evolve

Your needs will change: new subscribers, bookings, new zones, a second site. Choose a solution that can add these building blocks without replacing everything: multi-zone management, integration with your business tools (a hotel PMS, for example). A cloud solution evolves through software updates, not hardware swaps.

08

Assess the provider, not just the product

Who provides support, at what hours and in which language? Is maintenance included? Does the provider have references in your sector? What is the commitment period?

Choosing a parking solution isn't choosing a barrier. It's choosing a business model, an experience for your users and a management tool for years to come. Take the time to compare total cost, real time to go live and the solution's ability to grow with you.
